TAMWA, ZNZ reminds the protection of children on Eid day

Tanzania Media Women’s Association in Zanzibar (TAMWA, ZNZ) would like to extend a happy Eid wish to all Muslims across the country after completing the holy month of Ramadhan.

We understand that this is a joyful time for all Moslems who celebrate through various symbolic activities including to paint children with new clothes and allow them move around to meet with relatives and friends.

The organization would also like to take this moment to remind parents and guardians to stick to their children in order to protect them against the ill acts of sexual harassment.

The experience shows that during Eid El Fitri the abusive acts alarmingly increase against children who are under 18 of which up to five complaints are reported on a day.

This time around, though there is no official celebration of Eid, due to the outbreak of the corona virus (COVID 19), there are still the like hood of sexual violence perpetrators who might prepare to launch their attacks after the holy month of Ramadhan.

Some children are seen in groups roaming around the streets for the purpose of collecting Eid El Fitri presents and therefore risk being sexually assaulted as sometimes they pop into houses which they know very little about.

Sometimes, the children end up entering into the houses where potential perpetrators are based and they are therefore sexually assaulted or in other instances they are deceived with some gifts in the streets.

It is therefore prudent for children to stay under the strict care of their parents all day long; morning to afternoon as a means to protect them against sexual harassment as well as COVID 19.

We would also like to remind the citizens to continue taking great care against the foregoing virus as it can be avoided by following the laid down instructions from the medical experts.
